STATEMENTS
Artist statements are bothersome to both writer and reader. My friend Bob Teeple, once advised me thus: "Never believe anything an artist says". It's probably good advice. Maybe you should skip this page. Certainly one cannot count on the artist's intention. Oscar Wilde said "All bad art springs from genuine feeling". I really feel Dr. Barnes had it right when he said that everything we need to know about the work is present in the work. (Talk about a kind of thinking that's really out of fashion!) Nonetheless, I have written many such statements, sometimes under duress, sometimes inspired by another artist's efforts, sometimes inspired by a writer I admire, and, at least once, I made one as a drawing, just for fun. As the work changes so do the thoughts relating to it. These are a couple, old and new, and I'll add more.
